The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has been notified by the Department of State Services (DSS) about potential intentions by a coalition of banditry syndicate to target the Abuja-Kaduna standard rail gauge.
According to a security alert obtained by our correspondent, the intelligence agency has recommended the implementation of enhanced security measures to proactively prevent any potential threats along the route.
A leaked communication bearing the signature of DSS Director of FCT Command, R.N. Adepemu, and titled ‘Security Alert: Impending Threat By A Coalition Of Banditry Syndicate To Attack Abuja-Kaduna Train Service Along AKTS Corridor’, has underscored the need for heightened vigilance among train passengers, as cautioned by the DSS.
DSS warned of an “impending threat to seamless train transportation along the Abuja– Kaduna Train Service”
According to the memo, “Intelligence report indicates impending threat to seamless train transportation along the Abuja – Kaduna Train Service (AKTS). The development is sequel to the plot by a coalition of banditry syndicate to attack Abuja – Kaduna Train Service aimed at kidnapping passengers on board for ransom any moment from now.
“In view of the threat inherent and the need to forestall likely breach of security along the AKTS, it is advised that existing security arrangements be scaled up within and along the route. In addition, the need for the under listed counter security measures be emplaced to nip in the bud the impending threats- Air surveillance patrol; Surveillance on the rail track; Military checkpoint/patrol and Police checkpoint/patrol,”
Additionally, the intelligence agency has advocated for a security operation to be conducted in the vicinity of Byazhin, Jibi, and the lja forest. Furthermore, they have urged for measures to bolster the capabilities of Nigeria Police Mobile Force (NPMF) operatives by equipping them with walkie talkies to ensure the continuous provision of escort services for train operations.
It would be recalled that gunmen on the 28 March 2022, attacked an Abuja–Kaduna train in Katari, Kaduna State, and kidnaped many passengers.
