A devastating road accident occurred on Tuesday, resulting in the loss of six lives, with one person sustaining injuries.

In a somber update from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ondo State Command, FRSC State Sector Commander, Ezekiel SonAllah, conveyed this heart-wrenching news in an official statement released to the media in Akure.

The accident unfolded when a Red Man Diesel Truck collided with an Ash Toyota Sienna, identified by the registration FFN 310 PU. This tragic incident unfolded at approximately 1:39 pm, just 3 kilometers away from Akure Airport.

Of the eight individuals involved in the accident, six adult males tragically lost their lives, while one adult female sustained injuries.

Preliminary investigations by the sector commander have attributed the accident to factors such as speeding (Speed Violation – SPV), unsafe overtaking (Wrongful Overtaking – WOV), and a loss of control (Loss of Control – LOC).

In the aftermath of the accident, various items, including money and mobile phones, were recovered from the scene. These items have been turned over to law enforcement officers from Ogbese, located in Akure North Local Government Area of the state.

“Meanwhile, the six corpse have been deposited at the general hospital morgue, Akure while obstruction has been cleared and the vehicles, money and phones were handed over to the police,” he said.

SonAllah emphasized the imperative for motorists to consistently adhere to the recommended speed limits, with a specific reminder to commercial drivers to ensure the installation of speed-limiting devices in their vehicles.

“Our drivers should be safety conscious at all the times and should not overtake if it is not safe.

“Passengers should not only warn drivers in an event of excess speed but also report them to security agencies manning the highways,” he said.

The FRSC continues its efforts to promote road safety awareness and reduce road accidents across Nigeria.
