The Labour Party finds itself embroiled in a leadership crisis as a faction led by Lamidi Apapa has once again dismissed Julius Abure as the party’s chairman.
The controversy took center stage when COMRADE ERAGBE ANSLEM, the National Youth Leader of the Labour Party, issued a statement sighted by Top Society on Wednesday, titled “Which Appeal Court Affirms Julius Abure As National Chairman?” In this statement, Anslem raises several critical points in the statement:
“Criminal Charges and Indictment: Julius Abure faces serious criminal charges and indictment by the Nigeria Police FCID. These charges include perjury, forgery, impersonation, criminal conspiracy, and financial malfeasance, involving a staggering sum of over four hundred million naira (N400,000,000.00). Abure remains restrained by the FCT High Court and suspended by the Labour Party’s National Executive Committee (NEC).
“Legal Battles: There are ongoing legal battles in both the Benin High Court and the FCT High Court. While the Benin High Court addressed Abure’s suspension as a party member from his ward in Edo state, it did not determine his chairmanship of the Labour Party LP, which was addressed by the FCT High Court Restraining Order issued on April 5th, 2023.
“FCT High Court Order: The FCT High Court Order of April 5th, 2023, specifically restrained Julius Abure and others from parading themselves as the National Chairman and Executives of the Labour Party LP in Nigeria. This was due to alleged unlawful substitution in INEC’s portal, involving forged documents, fake FCT High Court affidavits, forged payment receipts, and signatures.
“Pending Appeals: Abure’s appeal against the FCT High Court’s decision is still pending in the Court of Appeal in Abuja. This appeal is based on the Nigeria Police Force Criminal Investigation Department’s findings and a forensic audit report that implicated Abure and others.
“Suspension by NEC: On May 3rd, 2023, the Labour Party LP’s National Executive Council suspended Julius Abure, Umar Farouk Ibrahim, Ojukwu Clement, Mrs. Oluchi Opara, Kennedy Ahanotu, and others. This suspension stemmed from their contempt of the FCT High Court Order of April 5th, 2023, related to the unlawful conduct of gubernatorial primaries and an unauthorized NEC meeting.
“Unvacated FCT High Court Order: The FCT High Court’s restraining order, issued on April 11th, 2023, to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has not been vacated, adding to the confusion surrounding Abure’s status as party chairman.”
With these revelations, the Labour Party LP finds itself in turmoil, with two factions claiming leadership. Alhaji Lamidi Basiru Apapa remains the Acting National Chairman of the party, according to the faction led by Anslem.

As this dispute escalates, the future of the Labour Party’s leadership remains uncertain, leaving party members and political observers eagerly awaiting further developments.

While the matter in Benin High Court had to do with Abure’s Suspension as a member of the Labour Party LP from his Ward in Edo state, the Court in Benin reinstated Abure as a member of the Labour Party LP in his Ward and that has nothing to do with Chairmanship of the Labour Party LP which was determined by the FCT High Court Restraining Order of 5th April, 2023.

4: The Matter in Benin City Edo State is irrelevant to the weighty Criminal Issues hanging over Abure’s neck and others in the FCT High Court for which Abure Appealed and that matter is still pending in the court of Appeal in Abuja, FCT based on the Nigeria Police Force Criminal Investigation Department, FCID Investigation with Forensic Audit Report that indicted Julius Abure, Umar Farouk Ibrahim, Ojukwu Clement and Mrs Oluchi Okpara.
5: Besides, the Labour Party LP National Executive Council, NEC in session suspended Julius Abure, Umar Farouk Ibrahim, Ojukwu Clement, Mrs Oluchi Opara, Kennedy Ahanotu and others on 3rd May, 2023 in Bauchi over their Contempt of the FCT High Court Order of 5th April, 2023 *for conducting illegal and unlawful Gubernatorial Primaries in Bayelsa, Imo and Kogi States on 15th April, 2023 and for conducting illegal and unlawful NEC meeting in Asaba, Delta State on 18th April, 2023*.
6: Below is the FCT High Court Restraining Order Notification to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC on 11th April, 2023 which has NOT been vacated yet !
So, which Chairman of Labour Party LP is Abure and which Court reinstated him ?
